About Us

SATHI NEPAL is a non-profit, non-governmental, humanitarian organization registered in Nepal and the USA as a 501(c) (3). A Board of Directors in Nepal and a Board of Directors in the USA govern SATHI NEPAL. Our dedicated volunteer staff with over 25 years combined experience in the field have launched successful grassroots fundraising efforts targeting individuals, community groups, schools and churches. These donations have been directly applied to programs. In the near future we aim to seek small-scale grants and funding from foundations to expand our donor base and deliverable services. Our team of volunteers, advisors and local staff has been working in cooperation with Nepali partners and the local school systems to design and implement programs since 1998.

The Need
Nepal is a country where two-thirds of the population lives below the poverty line where the male literacy rate is 59% and a shocking 24% for woman (UNICEF 2002). Access to education is often prohibitively high for the rural and urban poor due to related costs such as enrolment fees, mandatory uniforms, educational supplies and examination fees, which are the responsibility of the family. Poverty, poor nutrition and health, underdevelopment, familial and community financial and social resources, child labour and social inequalities are national barriers for children to access their right to education.  The Government poorly funds public education and the quality of teachers is often comparable to the minimal salary paid. A typical government school in Pokhara area may have several rooms built of stone, an inadequate quantity of wooden benches/desks to accommodate the over crowded classrooms, a blackboard and a box of chalk.
